ABOUT ME Joseph has been a member of the Black Dyke Band for the the last 10 years. He has toured throughout the world with both the band and as a soloist and with Black Dyke has won all the major brass band titles, as well as in 2006 winning the Stanley Wainwright Memorial Trophy at the British Open Brass Band Championships for Best Soloist. As well as playing for Black Dyke Band, Joseph is active as a soloist, chamber and orchestral musician, having played with Northern Sinfonia, York Guildhall, Manchester Camerata, Fine Arts Brass Ensemble, White River Brass and Jazz Action. In 2007 Joseph played the Vaughan Williams Tuba Concerto with the Northern Sinfonia. Joseph has been featured as a soloist on BBC radio, as well as on the Doyen, Naxos and Obrasso labels. In September 2008 he released his first solo album, accompanied by the Black Dyke Band under Dr Nicholas Childs, entitled “Debut” on the Doyen label, which features Concertos by English composers. A former Principal of the National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain and semi-finalist in the BBC Young Musician of the Year (1998 and 2000) and Shell London Symphony Orchestra Scholarship (2000), Joseph went on to study Music and Electrical Engineering at the University of Leeds. Whilst there he studied under Brian Kingsley of Opera North, but also gained further tuition from Roger Bobo, Patrick Harrild and James Gourlay. In 2002 Joseph was offered scholarships for postgraduate study at both the Royal Academy of Music in London and Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester. As an educator, Joseph works extensively as a classroom teacher and also performs as a York Clinician, taking part in community based projects, as well as in Holland, Sweden, USA and throughout the UK. He is currently Tuba Tutor of the Yorkshire Youth Brass Band and also on the International Brass Band Summer School. Joseph Plays exclusively on a York E-flat Preference Tuba.
